Early November morning deer hunt with my buddy Josh . We sat in until 9:30am or so seeing 3 young bucks with a couple of doe, just no shooters. We decided to go on foot to do a little scouting. The weather was nice and cool so we figured we would take a little hike, might as well!
On a thick fence line, we caught the tips of some horns so we stopped in our tracks and took a knee. The deer disappeared out of our sight. Then we saw him running back where he came from figuring he had smelled or seen us. We continued on about 30 yards or so only to have a deer begin blowing at us from our south. We focused our attention to that and advanced our position.
As we were looking to our left in the direction the doe was blowing, Josh yells at me to get ready. A mature, big bodied buck was running in from the right with his nose on the ground not paying any attention to us. As fast as it all happened, I could tell one side was pretty tall and large but couldn’t really make out what was going on with his other side. He looked gnarly through the scope.
I shouldered the ol’ CVA, remembered to cock the hammer (thankfully) and all
I remember is Josh saying, “he needs to go.” The buck was on the jog and I hit him with a loud MEHHH and luckily he stopped in his tracks……BOOM!!
The deer lunges backwards and runs around an island of trees and runs down in the area the doe was blowing at us from. Josh and I both gather our composure to talk about what just happened and then as any hunter who sees a deer run off I begin questioning my shot.
We walk over to where he was when I shot only to find zero blood. I then begin following his path he took and came upon a little blood! I knew we would find him right then. We blood trailed him down the ridge and begin to find more and more blood. I glance up and see his horns sticking up from the ground and it all came together. He didn’t go but about 60 yards from where I shot and piled up.
Time to pick up the bow and go after the big boys now! I was able to fill my muzzleloader tag on the last day of the Oklahoma season! Old, mature, freak nasty looking thing. Awesome hunt!
